Obedience Classes are Fun!

Investing the time to take a dog training class will help you to build a positive relationship with your dog.  Obedience is a bonding experience.  Dogs enjoy the mental stimulation, attention and rewards of learning.  Handlers enjoy the improved behaviour of their dogs.   It's a win - win!

Obedience doesn't have to end with a beginner class:  If you find that you enjoy working with your dog, and that your dog enjoys with you, you may wish to consider Obedience or Rally competitions or other dog sports where you and your dog can work as a team to earn Ribbons and Titles while having a great time together.

FPO&TC offers several sets of obedience classes from September through the end of May.  Classes are all taught by experienced Club Members volunteers.   A beginner class is offered, as well as a variety of classes for competitive obedience.  Classes are taught in the gymnasium at the CRA.

Beginner Classes:  The focus of FPO&TC's Household Level class is basic control and manners.  The goal is to help handlers build a positive relationship with their dogs while maintaining a leadership role.  This is a ten week course including an orientation night.  The lessons taught include sit, down, come when called, walking politely on a leash, and acceptance of handling.  Handlers will be shown how to use a clicker, how and when to use food for teaching, and how to get their dogs to focus on them in a distracting environment.  A clicker will be given to each handler in the Household class, and additional clickers may be purchased for a small fee.

Competition Classes:   The focus of FPO&TC's Competition Level classes is to prepare both dog and handler for the Obedience / Rally ring.  Competition classes are offered at a variety of levels in five week sessions.  Competition classes focus on fine points and precision, handling and footwork, as well as proofing the obedience exercises, therefore dogs must already be under control to participate in these classes.  Priority for these classes is given to Club Members.
